What a great season!

J3's, if you are interested in racing at Snowbird, Drew and Becky need to know by 4:00 PM Monday! Meeting times will be emailed to those that are racing.

Brighton is planning on staying open until April 22, so there is plenty of time to ski with your friends and family!

Looking for a Summer Ski Camp at Mt. Hood? There are a lot to choose from! We will send out more information about some great ones soon!

We are always looking for sponsors and fundraising opportunities. Please email Becky if you know of anything. Those are the top four items on our "wish list" right now.

Thanks again for a great season!

YSL Champs recap:
Isaiah was our TOP representative on the podium, placing 1st, 2nd and 4th this weekend! Great job!
Many of our racers scored "personal bests," too many to note, to be honest. Be sure to check out the race results on the Intermountain web site: www.ussa-imd.org. Click on Race Results -> Youth Ski League -> Then click on the race you wish to view, scroll down for the YSL Champs at the Canyons.
There are many pictures of our fun on Facebook, and we are hoping to get them loaded onto the web site as well. If you have pictures to share, get them to Jim or Becky. Wow, we had a GOOD time! Our YSL Cup team came in third, and skied GREAT at the UOP!

Hartlauer Memorial:
Parents: check with your volunteer coordinator for your "show up" time. When in doubt, check with Jim Ruelle. Our head gate keeper will be Han Kim this weekend, so if you are assigned to gates, check in with Han. Dave Duzy will be Chief of Course, so if you are on course crew, check in with Dave. Base area volunteers check in with Jim. Race officials and timing crew, check in with Jim and Becky.
Eric and Hunter will be skiing with the J6's on Saturday, and I believe two of them are going to give the race a "go" so good luck, little dudes!
RACERS: arrive ready to SKI at 7:45 AM. We will have bibs for you, and you will be getting on the chair at 8:15 AM with your coaches for inspection. This is the plan. It looks like a WET day, so plan accordingly. We cannot sit in the Chalet without purchasing food, so plan accordingly... grab a picnic table outside if you bring your lunch.
CARPOOL! Specifically the early morning volunteers, use the Park-n-Ride at the mouth of the Canyon. We need to reserve the few parking spaces we have between Milly and the church for the racers from other teams.
THIS IS A TWO DAY RACE! We need lots of volunteers for both days! Thank you, thank you!

YSL Championships at The Canyons! INFORMATION

YSL TEAM:

Friday, you will park and ride the Cabriolet from the parking area to the main plaza area. There will be a tent for you to register at and pick up lift ticket vouchers for the discounted passes that you wish to purchase. This tent will be there each day, so no worries. You should be able to pick up all vouchers on Friday if you wish. Each athlete will recieve a "goodie bag" with some swag in it as well as a t-shirt. Also, there will be some fantastic prize drawing's, so if you wish you can purchase some tickets at the registration/check in tent. There will be lines by TEAM, so check out the signs.

You will buy your athlete tickets at the ticket window with the vouchers you pick up. Be ready to jump into the ticket line.

Let's meet READY TO SKI at 9:45 at the top of the Cabriolet by the Guest services and ticket sales buildings. (If you want to arrive early, they may have the event check in tent open around 9:00, but no guarantees on that just yet.) The first RED COAT to arrive gets to pick the spot. We will get on the lift as soon as everyone is there. Coaches will attend a brief meeting at 10:00, then it is off to the chair lift for inspection of the Kombi.

Be sure to pack a backpack with a lunch, snacks, and drinks (plenty of water) for your athlete, as well as sunscreen. Going "back to the car" at the Canyon's is time consuming, so plan accordingly.

We will be sending out more information as it becomes available. I think this will get us through for now.  Let's have a FUN weekend! I'm looking forward to it!

Here is a link to the race announcement with a map of the plaza area at The Canyons and other important information. Let me know if you have questions.

Weekend report:
Saturday was a WINDY day at Snowbasin, but we had two medalists that prevailed through the howling winds to bring home some hardware! Savannah placed 10th in the J5 girls and KyAnn placed 9th in the J4 girls. Congratulations!
High Speed Training was a success at Brighton, and THEN the storm hit! We are glad to get some good training in while the weather was good.
This week: training Tuesday night. Entries are due to Becky by Monday for the Snowbasin Super-G. Check with your coach for a schedule of events, it is going to be a fun weekend.
Eric, Lyndsey and Jason's teams will be training at Brighton on Saturday to get ready for the YSL Championships. Several emails have been sent out regarding the cost of the event and extra activities. Be sure to register for the Friday night event if you are interested. That one you will register for on your own. Becky will take care of the race entries, and will need to know if your athlete will be racing all three days, or just one or two of the days. Please confirm with her via email this week.
The Hartlauer Memorial is coming up quickly! March 17-18, at Brighton. This is a South Series race. We will invite any interested J5's to race in this event. This is a two run event, with technical components. Talk to your coach if you are interested in racing, and FOCUS during training. We need to solidify volunteers for this event! Please be sure to email Jim and Becky so you are on the list!

Next saturday

One thing I forgot to add, next Saturday, I got the ok from the mountain to do some early morning speed training. They will open the lift for us at 8 and we will have control of milly for 1 hour. So don't be late, bring up a snack and water, we will be going non stop for the entire time. Thanks, Coach Drew
Hey everyone, great job in training today, there was some good skiing by all of you. Yes there are still some things we need to work on, I hope each of you knows as you should what your focuses are, whether it's moving those hips into your initiation and turn, allowing that inside ski to follow the lead of the outside ski (Patrick), leveling the shoulder (Maiaja) or squaring the upper body through turn (Ravi), or bring those hands out in front of our body more generating more forward pressure to the ski (Erin) but it's all starting to come together. Over the next few weekends the focus for the J3's is going to be mainly gs/ open gs, seeing as how we have the super g in a few weeks. Tomorrow it is supposed to snow all day so make sure you dress for the weather, and come with your game faces on. See you all tomorrow, Drew

Weekend at park city 2/11-2/12

To all of my J3's that were at Park City this weekend, great job. Although the course especially on Sunday got the best of some of us, with the near two foot high berms and the sopping wet snow, all of you definatley showed everyone one there what the Brighton ski team can bring to the table, taking home 2 second place finishes by Zack. This Tuesday night, plan on taking it easy, with free skiing and some drills. During the week, I would like for each of you to take a look at the videos of each of your runs and critique yourselves, not with a negative view, but instead with a more open eye, seeing the positives in all of your abilities and also focusing in on where in the turn, initiation, apex needs adjustment. Whether it is moving into the new turn earlier, having a straighter/ rounder line, squaring the upper body, or simply getting stronger on the outside edge, be open to noticing these flaws. If you would like, you can call me with any questions, comments or concerns that you may have. See you all Tuesday Night, Coach Drew

Sunday, February 12, 2012

...oh, and a few pictures are updated on Facebook! If you have some to add, give them to Becky or a board member. Thanks!
A brief summary of the Park City South Series Sunday
Well, if there ISN'T a puddle forming under your jacket as it dries out, you didn't have enough fun in the wet, wet snow... be sure to dry everything out, including your goggles, throw them over a heat vent so the water vapor gets out from between the lenses! It was a WET day!
  • Zach took home another silver medal, two for the weekend! Great job, Zach!
  • Ella went to the hospital and has a fractured humerus (near the elbow), which is NOT very humorous, as it turns out. Jason was right at the gate when she crashed, and Han was on the knoll near Becky, so he ran up to be with her while they got a sled ready. She will not need pins, and will get a hard cast in two weeks. She says "Hi!" to all of her teammates, coaches, and the parents who are sending positive thoughts her way. Ella is a strong little girl who will bounce back quickly.
  • We had a few J5's give the South Series a try today for the first or second time, great job!
  • Our PARENTS are awesome, bringing the tents and tables again. THANK YOU for keeping us somewhat dry and collected. If anyone took home an extra pair of black pants, they are Isaiah's. He had them at the bottom, but alas, they did not end up in his vehicle!
A Summary of our Results of the Brighton YSL:
Our team really shined on their home mountain, and our volunteers are the BEST in the WASATCH! Great results were had by all, some of the highlights are:

J4's
Lyndsey and Chris were really amazed, great effort, guys!
Aspen placed 12th, just missing the medals with a great run
Abby placed 13th, right behind Aspen, with a BIG smile on her face the whole way
KyAnn completed her second race ever, placing 18th, with courage
Summer brought home a Silver medal, placing 2nd
Isaiah had a GREAT run going, but that last little compression proved to be bigger than anticipated, but his top section would have had him bringing home a medal for sure!

J5's
Jason and Lyndsey are really impressed with everyone's skiing! Holy cow!
Connor D just missed the medals by two places, he placed 12th, great job!
Owen had a GREAT run going until he got caught with a LOT of speed. We hope to see him through the finish line soon when get puts it all together! His run looked great!
Sydney got caught by "the hole" and was bounced right out of the course :(
Madison and Elena proved to be good teammates to the end, placing 27 and 26 respectively, together, in their second race
Kate placed 20th and decided she wanted to race again!
Mia placed 18th and then hiked the hill to her parents a few times
Anna placed 16th, her best result yet!
Peyton placed 14th, just out of the medals, great job
Savannah took home an 8th place medal with a great run!
Megan surprised everyone, including herself, with the fastest time on the course and a First Place medal. Amazing.

J6's
Eric is proud! 2 of his 5 little racers brought home some hardware to Brighton! And no DQ's!
Kylie had a GREAT little run and placed 8th
Brandon skied his little heart out and placed 31st
Liam  showed his carving skills and placed 14th
Ezra  JUST MISSED a medal, placing 11th with his FAST run
Connor S surprised everyone, as the only 6 year old in the race to get a medal, placing 6th, and 22 overall for the boys, not too shabby for a little dude who still sometimes needs a nap (but don't tell him we said that)

Past weekend at park city and future training and races

Alright so as you all know we had a few unfortunate instances happen at park city, however we still had a few great runs to go along with it, but now that's behind us so let's move on and focus on what we have ahead of us. This weekend there is a south series gs race again at park city, however I was thinking we should maybe stay back and train at Brighton because it has been a while since we have had a full day of training, let me know what you all think about the idea. If there are some of you that would like to go and some want to stay back we could accommodate for that as well. Something else I would you all to ponder are the 2 slaloms and 2 gs races at snowking the 18-21 of February. Let me know what you all would like to do, hopefully if we do go we can get a few more of your teammates to come along. Tomorrow night we will be training slalom so come prepared with your game faces on. Coach Drew

GREAT day at Brighton Today! Thanks to all the parents who helped with the ski school course, and with the team BBQ!
Tomorrow is MORE OF THE SAME! Training is open for anyone coming up to Brighton, J6's will need a parent with them. Training course will be set by Chris, and the ski school course will be open as well.
We will have the grill fired up again, but it will be a "bring your own and BBQ your own" so if you want to have a hot lunch, bring it on up. Charcoal is already there!
Thank you, Jim, for being the Grill-master today!
***********************************************************************************
Next weekend is the Brighton YSL and the Park City South Series. Discuss with your coach and your athlete where they will be racing. We are looking forward to an AWESOME weekend again!

Park city race 2/4-5

Hello J3's going to Park city this weekend. I would like for all of you to be there no later than 8 am on the plaza, by the skate rink. I will have bibs, all you will need to do is get your lift tickets. The mtn is going to be very crowded tomorrow so ski slow around traffic and slow skiing areas. There will be multi day tickets available at the ticket window. Athletess are able to load lift at 8 for free ski warm ups on picaboos only. Womens first run is scheduled for 9:30. So everyone get a good night sleep and see you all bright and early.

Sunday, January 29, 2012

Today at Snowbasin included a tough course set for first run, followed by a nice easy set for second run. We had several J5's try south series "on for size" and they skied very well! The J5's had the toughest first run, and they really straightened out the bottom section for the J4's, and then straightened out one more kink for the boys run. That is ski racing! Every one of our J5 girls made it down the course, that was something to be proud of!
Results are online: http://www.ussa-imd.org/alpine/races11/south.htm. Be sure to note that Zach and AJ both came home with hardware for Brighton! Awesome job, guys! We were able to take video of almost every run this weekend, and it will be loaded onto sprongo.com. If you haven't received an invite, let Han Kim know, and he can hook you up, and you can see your racer. (email him through the "contact us" link on the web page if you would like) Be sure to watch the video, it is important to see how you ski when the pressure is on... racing is always different than training.

Saturday, January 28, 2012

Training at Brighton today was fabulous! Great job, coaches! Everyone switched gears and got some great GS training in on a blue sky day.
****************************************************************
The South Series at Snowbasin was a great day! The J3's had Zach and AJ in 4th and 5th place. We worked on our inspection of the course, learning to anticipate when the course changed due to the terrain and course set. The "coaches knoll" provided some challenge and entertainment on the second run, and Owen's butt might be bruised, he says... he needs more padding there. Everyone tried their best, and improvements were made between first and second run, that is all anyone can ask for, and THAT makes an awesome day.
*****************************************************************
Sunday, January 29, 2012 -- Racin' at the 'Basin again! (no training at Brighton)
Meet in Earl's Lodge between 7:45 - 8:00 am. Tickets go on sale at 8:00, so parents, plan on getting in line. The Gondola will start running for racers at 8:45, and inspection will start at 9:00. Sharpen your skis tonight! See you in the morning!

SNOWBIRD UPDATE!
Today: GREAT racing! We had 2 J5's give slalom a try, and they did great! There was some mix up in results, but once it was straight, we had Zach get second and Ravi get 5th!!! (he may not know this yet, until he reads this, we will get the medal tomorrow). Nick completed his first race EVER with flying colors, and our J4 girls showed they can bang gates with the best of them. Some falls occurred, some spirits crushed momentarily, but thus is the life of a ski racer. It has it's ups and it's downs, luckily we get more ups then downs.
Tomorrow will be a different day due to the weather. Be prepared. Everything will be moved up 15 minutes if possible, but the weather could push things back. First run inspection will be from 9:15 - 9:45, First run for J5's will start at 10:00 am, J4-J3's at 11:00 am.
Second run J5 Inspection 12:30 - 1:00 pm, J4-J3's 12:45 - 1:15 pm. Second run start J5's 1:15 pm, J4-J3's 2:15 pm.
Lyndsey is going to be the REF of the J5 course, so she will be busy watching the race and inspecting the course EARLY.

BIB's for Monday:
Megan Stone - 9
Savannah Dustman/Davenport - 16
Ella Kim - 81
Aspen Parker - 78
Summer Stapley - 80
Lindsey Blanchat - 82
Erin Malooly - 92

Today at Brighton: GREAT training by everyone! You all look ready for the YSL.

An unfortunate turn of events for Trista, Kylie's mom, caused some awesome coaches and parents to pull together their resources. Trista fell and hurt her knee, Jason and Eric got her to patrol, Eric is driving her to the hospital, Lyndsey is going to pick her up later and take her home, Phyllis and Sean are going to take Kylie with them, and we have a friend to take her car down. Wow! an exciting afternoon. Our team IS a family, and it is the unfortunate times like these when our family shines and pulls together. Thank you, everyone, named and not named, as I'm sure there were many hands helping all of this get planned.

Today at Snowbird!!! Kombi racing! The word of the day was "interesting." The course was "interesting." The snow conditions were "interesting." And the results were "interesting." (just kidding) AJ placed 2nd and Zach placed 5th. Cameron just missed a medal by a bit. Everyone got their "race gitters" out, and will be READY to ski slalom tomorrow. The Kombi is fun, and confusing, and maybe "interesting" is a good word... I like the word FUN! Look for results on www.ussa-imd.org and www.livetiming.com tonight!

Brighton racers attending the SNOWBIRD SOUTH SERIES! Important Update!

Saturday: arrive at 7:45 AM and meet coach Drew at Creekside. Han Kim and Chad Stapley will be assisting Drew on Saturday (Chris Henderson was called out of town unexpectedly) Be sure to ask them any questions you have, and be sure to THANK THEM for helping out and stepping in.

Ticket window: will open at 8:00, parents get in line early!

Lifts: will start at 9:00 AM (the FIS snowbird team will be having high speed early morning training going on. Watch out for fast skiers. You will not be allowed to load the lift until 9:00 due to their training course)

Inspection: 9:15 - 10:15 am

Girls start 10:30 am

Boys start 11:30 am (tentative)

Awards: 1:30 pm

Kombi: They will run this on Dick Bass down Wilbere race course. The recommended route will be get off at Mid Gad, ski across race run with assist of hosts, take Wilbere chair to the start. The Kombi will be 150 meters, so a minimum of 30 gates, they are anticipating a course of about 40 gates give or take a few. Approximately 15-20 slalom stubby gates, then panel GS gates. Slalom skis are recommended, no mouth guards necessary since the stubby gates will be used, and pole guards are discouraged due to the use of panel gates, for safety. There are 4 "rollers" or bumps in the top section, and then 4 "rollers" or bumps in the lower section. You will HAVE to turn early if the gates take you over the rollers, or you will be late to the next gate, so pay attention during inspection. This is a one run race. Saturday and Sunday are both two run races, so they will be longer days.

THERE IS NO SKIING ON BIG EMMA. The patrol will pull your pass if you carve a turn. SKID your turns if you happen to find yourself on Big Emma. Sideslip if you are worried. If you look like a racer, consider your pass gone.

No bags should be left in Creekside.

We will have a RED BRIGHTON GATE PANEL as our "flag" for the weekend. Look for it... if you don't see it, ask, you may have to help put it up :)

DEVO and YSL athletes!
This weekend, January 14, plan on training stubby slalom at Brighton with Lyndsey, Jason, Eric and Laura! They are working on getting you ready for the Park City YSL on January 21, 2012.

The race will be held on Lower CB's, the World Cup race run. We will use the Eagle Lift to access the race. NO parents are allowed to get off Eagle half-way, leave the kids with the coaches. There will be no free skiing on the race hill. Lifts will start at 8:30 AM.

START ORDER: 10:00 AM J6 girls, followed by J6 boys
11:15 AM J5 girls, J4 girls, followed by J5 boys and then J5 boys

AWARDS: to the TOP 10 in each gender and age category approximately 15 minutes after the last racer in the finish arena. We encourage EVERYONE to stay for awards and cheer on the victors!

ENTRY FEE: $14.00 per racer. Send payment to Becky, as the team must write only one entry check.

LIFT TICKETS: $20 for 12 and under. The ticket windows will open at 8:00 AM, and you will have to have your race bib to get the discount pass.

SKILLS QUEST STATIONS will also be set up in the dogleg area--away from the start, far skier's right side of Lower CB's. This is an idea USSA is experimenting with, all kids are encouraged to ski them with their coaches: Side Slip, One ski straight run, and Pole Jumpers.

Parents are encouraged to bring up tents (must have weights to keep them from flying away, some sort of building code in Park City) and lawn chairs, grills, coolers, etc. Pack a lunch for your athlete, as food services are a WALK to get to! Please be aware that “Burton” will be having their “Burton Experience” in the area from the parking lot up to the Eagle Maize – this will make walking up more entertaining for everyone, but a bit congested as well.

MEET YOUR COACH at the bottom of FIRST TIME lift, ready to ski, at 8:00 AM. Parents, get in line for the lift tickets, and we will get you the race bibs. Do not be late! We will get on the lift as soon as they open and we have everyone, for course inspection.

Coaches will ski with kids in their groups until approximately 3:00, unless you have made other arrangements. It is a great experience to ski at a new resort on different runs. J4's who are racing will join Lyndsey's group and have a fantastic time.

All athletes must fill out a Park City Mountain Release, emailed out by Becky. If she doesn't have it, your athlete cannot race. Use this link, page 2 is the release, if you need to print it out again: http://www.ussa-imd.org/alpine/races11/pc_ysl_ra.pdf

Still have questions? Contact Becky or another team parent who has been around for a few years... Ski racing is FUN! Bring COW BELLS to ring for our athletes, charge your video cameras, and tell Grandma and Grandpa to dust off their Sorrel's to join you in watching your athlete ski fast!
