Comments on Equipment for your Youth Racers - Intro

One of the most common questions we receive from families new to ski racing, as well as experienced ski families, is, "what kind of equipment do I need to get for my child?" It is a daunting question, given that equipment can have a dramatic effect on your athlete. It can play a significant play on how comfortable your athlete is, how well they progress technically, how safe they are, and how much fun they have. The wrong equipment choices can make for a miserable experience. Yet, we still want to maximize our money, because race gear is expensive for most of us. And of course, our kids are growing, and sometimes race gear lasts barely a season.

I'm writing this as a board member and a ski racing parent, so this may be a slightly different perspective than a coach's. My wife and I have two racers on the team, so I think we have some hard earned experiences to share. If you have comments or disagree, please feel free to comment below.

I will divide my comments by different types of gear: boots, skis, bindings, poles, protective gear, speed suits, and other. I will post these in the coming weeks.
